The Dementia Dossier: Scoop with a Whoop

No doubt you have heard of Elf on a Shelf, a modern holiday tradition where a toy Christmas elf is placed first on a shelf, then moved daily for family members to find. I have decided to add an elf cousin (very distant cousin) to the tradition, and am calling it Scoop with a Whoop. “It’s time for ice cream!” Mom whoops on an evening. “Enjoy your ice cream!” I call back across the room, wondering where I will find the ice cream scoop in the morning. Will it be in the utensil drawer? Not likely. Will it be in the freezer, on top of the ice cream container? Very likely. What about lying on the drying pad, partially rinsed? Possibly. Will it merely be in the sink, or on the counter? Other good possibilities. What about in the dishwasher? Not likely. Or, will I find it placed picturesquely on an oven mitt, stuck fast with dried ice cream? Yes: that’s where I found it most recently. I sent the mitt to the laundry and the scoop to the dishwasher. I think Scoop with a Whoop has real market potential. You won’t find the shelf-elf in the sink, in the dishwasher, in the freezer, or glued to a hot pad!
