I often contemplate the many metaphors for our voyage through this temporal life: ships crossing rough seas; trains chugging up mountains; footsteps in the sand. What gives momentum to our life’s journey? What guides our life’s direction? Where did we begin, and what will our destination be? What are the roles of God, of pain, of choice? Whatever your travels, may they be blessed.
FOOTSTEPS TO BEYOND
Wingtips and heels
traversed that chasm
between
the last train car
step
and the train station
platform
just as the forward motion
stopped
and the locomotion
whooshed
its unnecessary steam,
as their movement along
the tracks,
over hills and through forests and farms,
became,
crossing that chasm,
footsteps
to beyond.
Rabbit Lane: Memoir of a Country Road, b Roger Baker, is now available in print and for Kindle on Amazon.
I like the rhythm of this piece, the pauses and stops drive the motion of the journey.

Sorry to be cryptic, Patsy.
Wingtips and heels = men and women = the human race, all on the same journey.
We have traveled on the train, i.e., through life.
We show faith to step from the train onto the platform, using our own locomotion to move onward.
Our footsteps now take us into the beyond, to continue our journey to unknown destinations, but still destinations chosen by us and our steps.
Does that help? Thanks for reading.

Thank you. I re-read it a few times and got the drift. No pun intended. Nice work!

Sorry to make you work so hard at it! Usually I try to be more transparent, but still poetic.

Thank you so very much. And thank you for reading so many of my poems. As you contemplate the many possible directions your life can take at this moment, I pray for you to have discernment regarding which path will help you become your highest self. I have a feeling you will find it, though it can (and perhaps should) take time.
